The hardest day

Standard

We put out a lot of energy in our running/bike trail adventures on our anniversary vacation in Tahoe but the most challenging and potentially dangerous was a hike we took into the back woods.  It was supposed to be a relatively easy hike meandering besides streams and waterfalls then ending at the mountain top for a free tram ride back down.  It started well.  The scenery was awesome.  Discovering the chair lift  was fun but we never made it to the top.  We lost our path.  We tromped over heavily bushed areas, crossed over the river on boulders and climbed on our bellies over lava rocks that crumbled under our fingers to within 500 feet of the mountain top then had to carefully inch down on our bottoms to safety when it looked too risky to press on.  The most disappointing thing is that Ken’s shot of me inching up the sheer cliff looks, from his perspective right above me, looks like I’m kneeling on the ground with my tush in the air.  O well.  God answered my prayer.  We managed to find our way back and we lived to fight another day!  Hooray!!!  Here is some of our awesome scenery from this risky business.

More treasures from the trail

Standard

Today we went for a long run.  Tuesday Ken outran me and I thought I outran myself.  My run/walk was an amazing 6 miles.  After Ken said our next run would be 10 miles.  My reaction way “No way!”  But I relented with “I’ll see how I do.”  Well Ken exceeded his goal: 11.5 miles!  And I hung in there for 10.2 miles!!!!  Wooohoo!!!  Yes I am sore.  Walking hurts.  But the best of the bike trail sights were yet to come and because I kept going I got to be there to share them with you.  I think you will say: “Now that’s what I’m talking about!”   :-]

The glory of Dogwoods

Standard

We have a small cabin in a lush forest surrounded by dogwood trees.  They are gorgeous in full bloom reminding me of a bride adorned for her wedding.

image

We came up at the beginning of the blooming season for dogwoods.  It is especially shady around our cabin so the petals are green and sparse.  Areas with full sun are covered with blooms turned white.

Good morning forest!

It is good to praise You Lord to sing praises to God Most High.  It is good to tell of Your love in the morning and Your faithfulness at night.  In the morning I will sing.  I will sing of Your strength.   In the morning I will sing  I will sing of Your love.  You are my Defender my place of safety in times of trouble.   God You are my strength I will sing praises to You.

A work in process: Labor of love

Standard

When our girls were small we envisioned creating a close family bond, family traditions, lots of  hands on active face time.  We achieved that by investing in a tiny, well worn 900 square  foot cabin in the woods.  It became our go to place for hiking in the forest, building, creating, drawing, celebrating birthdays, playing in the snow and hanging out on foggy days watching tv and videos.

It was 60 years new when we bought it and now, 25 years later, we are anticipating a total remake but are not quite prepared for that so, in the meantime,  we are patching and fixing to shore the old girl up.

Here’s a peek through the upstairs bathroom window

86 year old. Ringing with the sounds of laughter and the delighted exclaimations of children busy crafting, painting, exploring, watching videos. This small cottage in the woods was purchased for these very purposes: creating memories, traditions, developing character and strengthening the bond of love in our family. We bought this palace when it was already old at 60 years. Now out hope is to tear down and rebuild with plans to accomodate us, our 2 daughters, their sweet husbands and7 grandchildren. Doesn't't that sound like a piece of heaven?!! Until then, however, we must shore up what remains. Definitely a work in progress!

There was a pipe leak from the upstairs somewhere inside the walls dripping from the ceiling to the bathroom below so we had to open the walls to identify the source.

Here is the narrow stairs to the loft above we all sleep in.  The facing wall has a removable door the hides the plumbing from the upstairs toilet area.

So these cubbies provide storage space for all kinds of stuff.  Things that were left from the previous owners as well. 🙂

The cabin has no concrete foundations. It sits on wood pillars with space underneath that follows the slope of the property.  More storage.

Outside stairway. Really this is a fun and awesome adventure for the whole family.  We are discovering the joys of ownership.  We CAN DO and DO WITHOUT more things than we ever imagined.  This is an absolutely gorgeous forest and we accept all of it as a gift from our very kind and gracious God.  He is good ALL THE TIME! 🙂
