Rocking in the Rockies

Standard

We were blessed to be able to spend an early Christmas with our family in Colorado last week. Snow on the ground, clear skies, delightful surprises. The wild life provided lots of photo ops especially at Cabela’s sports shop! On a drive in the country we caught lounging buffalo, horses’s in their winter coats, wild turkeys, and tons of prairie dogs popping out of their dirt digs wagging their tails and shouting alerts. On the second day we went to an indoor arena and watched the kids exercise and practice soccer moves. Outside the arena golfers honed their driving skills. Then we went for snow play and boppa tossed frozen blocks of snow to the delight of our grand kids.

We came loaded with presents but the best gift of all was our precious time together. Our grand kids, ages 2,4 and 6, so delighted with their antics and sweet expressions of love. And our daughter and son-in-law touched us with their kindness and allowing us to share in their lives. In the end the truth remains that life, true living, is all about people. The people God places in our path to love and care for and receive love and care from. There were people God placed in our path on the flight up and on the flight back that needed God’s special touch and we were so grateful for the opportunity to enter into their times of sorrow and fear and be the ones to share God’s words of encouragement. I know Christmas is not a time of joy for everyone. It can be a time of sorrow, regret, fear, loss. Time flies so fast. Each day blurs into the next and the year too quickly gone leaving a sense of disappointment over unmet dreams, unfinished goals, loss of loved ones or broken relationships. Be of good cheer. There is hope that comes from the One Who said: Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in Me. In my Father’s house are many mansions. If it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you I will come again and receive you unto Myself that where I am there you may also be. (John 14:1-3). Only Jesus brings hope and promises to make everything new. I pray this Christmas you find the hope your heart is longing for!

Rocking Out With Yard Art

Standard

My neighbor just lost her mother.  I wanted to convey how much God loves her so I pulled Jesus’ analogy from the sermon on the mount in Matthew where He uses the care God takes with creating magnificent flowers that are so short lived and points out how very much more he cares about meeting our needs who, to God are of far greater worth.

I found this photo of the lily and painted both the flower and Matthew’s verse in part.  I loved this rock because of its size and interesting colors.  This work is not finished but when it is done I hope my neighbor will find a place in her yard for this and take comfort every time she sees it.

Runner: What do you say when they pass you up?

Standard

image

O yeah she passed me up.  I tried to match her stride but my short legs had to plow the ground twice as fast.  Then up ahead I came upon my worthy advocate and caught up while she was adjusting her ear pods.  “You are doing so great!  Keep it up!”. I tossed over my shoulder as I passed.  “I’m old.”. She replied as I moved past.  Old?  “You’re better than me!”.  In a little bit runner girl passed me up again.  “Thanks for the encouragement!”. She tossed back as her form got smaller with the widening distance between us.

Just a word.  Just a nod.  Little remarks of praise and encouragement makes all the difference.  What do I want to have happen in the enevitable moments when someone’s path crosses mine in the every day activities of life?  Does it matter if I keep my mouth shut and pretend I don’t see them?  Jesus said its much better to be on the giving end than the receiving end.  I am finding that to be so.  When I look about me for something  good or positive I can remark about and be the first to lob a blessing at the other it is a great icebreaker and creates a common ground for future connecting.  It’s like being the host at every party.  A party that celebrates the cool things that are noticed in others.

Ok.  I’m still the slow one but I was the first to lob a blessing!  🙂

Evening praise

Standard

My bedroom is a place that gladdens my heart.  I’m surrounded by reminders of my loved ones.  Mom barely out of high school poseing with my dad for a photo taken before their first date and the next on their wedding day.  Life seemed so uncomplicated in the day from the pictures on the wall but truth be told, my parents gave me a sweet, happy childhood. They taught me early that Jesus loves me, that I have a Good Shepherd, that I can go to Him with all my problems, and He would take all the dark and oddly colored threads of my life and create a beautiful masterpiece if I just trust    Him

The evening shadows and warm light from the setting sun are comforting.  I am so grateful for God’s kindness and His goodness.  His mercies are new every morning and His faithfulness is my evening song.

The gift: blessing!

Standard

image

Words are powerful.    In the Bible the book of James says the tongue can pour forth both blessings and curses.  The person that can control the tongue is perfect.  My heart’s greatest longing is to use my words to bless and build up others.  I know I have hit the jackpot (Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!) when my gift causes the recipient to burst out in tears and exclaimations. 🙂

The picture above is a photo I took and downloaded to PowerPoint then added text using each letter of my friend’s name to describe a virtue or character trait I admired about her.  The next thing I did was find an interesting rock from my garden and painted the word “Precious” and the Bible reference Jeremiah 31:3 on it.  My purpose was to let her know just how precious she is to God for He says “I have loved you with an everlasting love.”.   I will give my friend and co-worker these gifts tomorrow night for her going away party.  Do you think I will hit the jackpot?  Would you like to receive such a humble gift of love?
