Building your marriage to last has much to do with understanding what covenant means to God, and therefore, what it should mean to you. A covenant is a set of promises between two people or groups that binds them together.
Biblically, a covenant is much more than a contract. It’s a bond and promise so strong—so absolute—that only God can give you the means to understand and keep it.
The difference between a contractual relationship and a covenant promise is the difference between performance-based love and love without condition.
On one side there is anxiety and on the other there is peace. Fear versus faith. Selflessness versus selfishness.
The greatest freedom to be had in marriage lies, ironically, within the strong bounds of covenant. There’s nothing else like it because there is nothing else like marriage.
Your marriage covenant is important to God, not so he can hold it over your heads but so he can express his vast love for you, multiply his joy in you, and amplify his own glory through you.
