We need to position ourselves so we keep on being filled, so we are in the
right place to continue receiving the blessings of God. How do we do this?
By depleting the supply of oil God has given us—by pouring ourselves out.
We pour out our lives in His service in order to empty ourselves, so there is
room for Him to Fill us again, so we can pour ourselves out, and so on—over
The more we pour out, the more we receive.
Elisha instructed the widow in 2 Kings to go home and shut the door—
representing the entering of the secret place of God’s presence—and “pour
oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side” (2 Kings 4:4).
Holy Spirit will keep pouring Himself out as long as people are willing to be
filled and willing to be poured out themselves. As long as He can find those
who are wholly given over to God to be used for His purposes.
God will keep pouring out His presence as long as there are vessels to be
filled. But He can’t pour Himself out where there is nothing to contain His
“When all the jars were full she said to her son, ‘Bring me another one,’ But
he replied, ‘There is not a jar left.’ Then the oil stopped flowing” (2 Kings 4:6).
Holy Spirit’s oil stops flowing when there are no more vessels left to fill. Let
us be those who constantly empty ourselves to make room for more of His
presence. Let’s make it our aim to be empty so we can be full!
